Club Background

The petrochemicals industry began in Thailand 40 years ago with its first production in PVC resin and followed by PS resin in a year later. However, the discovery of natural gas in the Gulf of Thailand in 1970s marked a significant turning point in the developmental structure of the country.

The petrochemicals industry had its transition from family-oriented trading activity based in Bangkok to the production of a wide range of products in large petrochemical complexes on the Eastern Seaboard.

In the past ten years, plastics consumption in country had significant growth. The domestic demand increased from 2.5-10 kg/person/year to 40 kg/person/year in 2003. The petrochemicals industry as plastics producer continues with a dramatic expansion in all aspects and is making an increasingly valuable contribution to Thailand’s economy (4.52% GDP in 2002).
